The Wadhwani Foundation and the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur) have partnered to establish a School of Artificial Intelligence and Intelligent Systems. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was present at a launch event in New Delhi when a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed to cement the partnership.

It is anticipated that the new school will serve as a superhub within the Wadhwani Innovation Network. Beginning in 2026, the newly created department at WSAI will provide student, doctorate, and early research center programs in intelligent systems.

IIT Kanpur’s director, Professor Manindra Aggarwal, highlighted the institute’s intelligent system and the continuous efforts in cyber security. “This support will boost our efforts to build an ecosystem that carries both useful solutions and research boundaries,” he stated. By collaborating with industry partners and supporting start-up efforts, the school will also concentrate on commercializing research findings.

A similar partnership with IIT Bombay and the Ausandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) was launched in the same program, in addition to the IIT Kanpur project. This partnership focused on biochemistry, health technology, and quantum technologies.

IIT Kanpur, one of the nation’s premier IITs, was founded in 1959 and is a leader in engineering, research, and innovation. For many JEE candidates, the Institute is their ideal. Alumni from the Institute include Indigo Airlines co-founder Rakesh Gangwal and Infosys founder NR Narayana Murthy.

According to the Ministry of Education’s annual NIRF Rankings, IIT Kanpur came in fifth place overall in 2024, fourth in engineering, seventh in research, and 29th in management.

Recently, the Class of 1980 also donated Rs 4.2 crore to the Institute. Between March 2 and 4, during their 45th-year reunion, the donation was disclosed. At the reunion, up to sixty-three graduates were in attendance.

In 2024, 152 Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) were filed by the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK). According to an Institute release, the institute has maintained the growing momentum for the fourth year in a row with this milestone of the most IPRs filed in a single year.
