Canada election results: PM Modi congratulates Canada Prime Minister Mark Carney for Liberal Party’s victory

Canadian media projected the Liberals would form Canada’s next government, but it was not yet clear if they would hold a majority in parliament.

On Monday, April 28, 2025, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberal Party won the country’s federal election, marking a dramatic turnabout spurred by trade war and annexation threats from US President Donald Trump.

Mr. Carney emphasized the significance of Canadian unity in the face of Washington’s threats during a victory address given in front of supporters in Ottawa. He also restated a belief he held before the campaign: that the U.S.-Canada system, which had been mutually beneficial since World War II, had come to an end. “We are over the shock of the American betrayal, but we should never forget the lessons,” he stated.

It wasn’t immediately obvious if the Liberals would gain an outright majority or would need to rely on one or more smaller parties to form a government and pass legislation, but after polls closed, they were predicted to win more of Parliament’s 343 seats than the Conservative Party.
