Operation Sindoor Updates: Pakistani Forces Launch Shelling in Kupwara, Jammu & Kashmir
At least 12 civilians and one soldier killed, many injured in shelling by Pakistan in J&K

Kupwara/Poonch, May 8, 2025 – Tensions flared along the Line of Control (LoC) on Wednesday as Pakistan Army troops launched intense mortar shelling and gunfire targeting civilian areas in Jammu and Kashmir, resulting in the deaths of at least 12 civilians—including three women and three children—and injuries to over 50 others. The attacks spanned across four border districts, leaving behind a trail of damaged homes and vehicles.
In a separate incident in the Poonch sector, an Indian soldier lost his life in what officials have described as “unprovoked shelling” by Pakistani forces.
Cross-border firing continued into Thursday, marking the second straight day of hostilities in Kupwara district, where security forces remain on high alert.
Amid the escalating military tensions, Prime Minister Narendra Modi convened a high-level meeting with President Droupadi Murmu and later chaired a Cabinet session to update ministers on the ongoing operations. An all-party meeting has also been scheduled in Parliament to apprise political leaders of the developments under ‘Operation Sindoor.’
As a precautionary measure, the government has suspended commercial flight operations at 21 airports across northern and northwestern India until May 10. The closures follow ongoing Indian military action near the international border, signaling the seriousness of the unfolding conflict.
