UWA plans to be the First Australian University to Launch Campus in Mumbai

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has received an application from the University of Western Australia (UWA), one of the top 100 universities in the world, to open many branch campuses in India, with Mumbai serving as the main hub. Often compared to the Ivy League, UWA is the first Australian Group of Eight (Go8) university to open a physical campus in India.

The announcement was made today at the Jio World Centre during the World Audio Visual & Entertainment Summit (WAVES), when UWA Chancellor Diane Smith-Gander met behind closed doors with Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

UWA seeks to capitalize on India’s status as the world’s second-largest innovation ecosystem. It intends to provide a variety of undergraduate and graduate programs in the fields of business, creative industries, and STEM, including courses from the esteemed UWA Conservatorium of Music. Tamil Nadu campuses are also being considered, pending clearance by the UGC and UWA Senate.

UWA, a public research university in Perth, Western Australia, was established in 1911 and is currently ranked 77th in the world. It is the most employable university in Western Australia and is regularly rated in the top 1% of institutions globally. Australian Prime Ministers, High Court Justices, Nobel Laureates, and Fields Medal winner Akshay Venkatesh are among the distinguished alumni of UWA.

“Mumbai continues to attract the brightest minds from across the country, and Navi Mumbai is fast emerging as a leading educational and innovation hub,” said Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who praised the effort. As UWA strengthens our close relationship with the Government of Western Australia, we are pleased to welcome it to Maharashtra.

Chancellor Diane Smith-Gander reaffirmed UWA’s commitment to supporting India’s National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and highlighted the university’s longstanding involvement with India, highlighting partnerships in business, plant sciences, and agriculture.

Given that India’s higher education market is expected to expand by 60% over the next ten years, UWA’s presence will aid in meeting the growing need for top-notch instruction. Transferring from the India campus to UWA’s Crawley campus in Perth and vice versa will open up a wealth of opportunities for international academic collaboration and professional growth.
